Xichong Coastal Reserve

Late last year we proposed a resilient ‘landscape first’ masterplan for Shenzhen’s 18-square kilometres Xichong Coastal Reserve. The area features a magnificent combination of forests, mountains, and beaches, and is one of the largest nature parks and natural coastlines in South-Eastern China.

In late 2018, Typhoon Manghut devastated southern China, causing unprecedented damage. Since then, many reconstruction projects are underway to repair the damage along the coastline. Despite the increase in typhoon severity, most popular beach destinations have approved new high-density mega-developments along their beachfront. Mandaworks, teamed up with Gossamer and Arcadis, to propose a different approach. One that prioritizes typhoon resistant ecological restoration and the celebration of local landscape character and culture!
