Project description:

Uppsala is growing, and the development area of Södra Staden plays a key role in the city’s expansion. Gottsunda, a district within this area, is planned to become an attractive and vibrant neighborhood with new residential areas, parks, improved transportation, and spaces for public life and gatherings.

The project presents a structural plan and a set of design guidelines to support future development. A new tramline is planned at the heart of the district, connecting the southern and northern parts of Uppsala. Surrounding residential enclaves are linked through new buildings and green spaces, creating a diverse mix of housing typologies and lifestyles. Along the tramline, a sequence of public meeting places is introduced, including a new central square with a swimming center at the core of the site, as well as green spaces for recreation and sports. Through this approach, the tramline becomes the key precondition for the district’s integration, enabling new connections, shared urban spaces, and a continuous network of linked city rooms.

Principles for block structures, façades, roofs, ground floors, and courtyards are defined to ensure a coherent neighborhood identity. The guidelines aim to create an urban environment that is sensitive to its context while delivering a high level of architectural quality.
