Project Description:
Hlemmur Square is a transformative urban project in central Reykjavík, turning a former traffic intersection into a lively public space that celebrates everyday city life. Building on the success of the nearby Food Hall, the design introduces new programs and versatile gathering areas that attract people year-round.
At the core of the concept is The Snake—a long, sculptural steel structure that winds through the pedestrian street Laugavegur and into the square. It serves as seating, a planter, a bike rack, lighting, and a water feature, seamlessly blending functionality, artistry, and playfulness while visually connecting the area.
The project emphasizes sustainability and climate resilience by using local materials, diverse plantings, and water management systems. Thoughtfully designed microclimates and adaptable layouts ensure the space remains active and comfortable year-round.
Hlemmur Square reflects Reykjavík’s evolving urban identity—open, flexible, and connected—offering a welcoming gathering place where nature, culture, and community converge in a vibrant, lasting urban landscape.
