Project description:

Hjorthagen Hillside connects the existing neighborhood of Hjorthagen with Kolkajen in Norra Djurgårdsstaden, one of Stockholm’s largest urban development areas. Developed in close collaboration with the City of Stockholm, the project demonstrates how essential infrastructure can be integrated into the city as a usable and meaningful public space.

At its core is a new energy tunnel, a large concrete structure that could easily have remained a barrier. Instead, it is used as the foundation for a new connection. The tunnel portal is clad in corten steel, whose warm tone relates to the historic brick architecture of the nearby Gasworks, giving the structure a clear and contextual identity.

The stair and park structure transforms a previously limited passage into a safe and accessible route. Stroller ramps, seating, and carefully placed lighting support movement throughout the day and into the evening. Durable materials such as granite setts provide long-term robustness while improving access between levels and into surrounding green spaces.

Ecological strategies are integrated from the outset. Existing oaks are carefully protected, and new trees are introduced to strengthen biodiversity over time. Together, the project creates a resilient green space, a social meeting place, and a vital link between two parts of the city.
